The Kraul Kári Sailing Boat Kit lets children build a real working wooden sailboat and then take it outdoors to discover what happens when wind and water take over.
Its beautifully curved sail and simple wooden form are inspired by the unmistakable shape of early Viking ships. Kári takes its name from the figure associated with the wind in Norse tradition, and the little boat certainly lives up to it: even a gentle breeze can send it gliding surprisingly quickly across the water.
Building the boat is part of the adventure. Children assemble the wooden hull and mast themselves, add the sail and then see whether their creation really works. Once launched, changing wind strength and direction immediately become something to notice rather than an abstract idea.
Four pieces of coloured heavy paper are included for the sails, so the boat can take on a slightly different character each time. And if the far bank looks a little too distant, a long piece of string can be tied through the hole in the mast so Kári can always be brought safely home. The retrieval string is not included.
A beautiful combination of making, outdoor play and simple science, Kári is just as at home beside a stream or pond as it is on a family trip to the beach.
